Police, health, and drug experts gather to share expertise and discuss emerging trends

On Tuesday, 7 October 2025, representatives from DEWVA West Midlands, DCI Chris Cook and Civilian Drug Expert Erin Wright, welcomed over 60 attendees to the annual regional Continuing Professional Development (CPD) conference held in West Mercia. Attendees came from the four regional police forces, the National Crime Agency (NCA), NHS, Warwickshire local authority, and included drug experts from the East Midlands.
The conference began with a short welcome and introductions, followed by brief updates from Chris and Erin on the current focus of the DEWVA committee. They emphasised the importance of leveraging the expertise within the region and working more closely together to provide the best advice and guidance to members.

The first session of the day was delivered by the NCA, focusing on cocaine extraction and supported by useful case studies. The presentation highlighted ways to maximise evidence gathering at scenes and explained the extraction process in detail. The NCA also presented on nitazenes and synthetic opioids, featuring a case study relevant to the region. Both sessions were well-received and sparked lively discussions among attendees.
After lunch, representatives from the drug and alcohol support service, Cranstoun, shared insights on the trends they observe through referrals and outlined the support services available, tailored to individual needs.
The audience then heard an open and honest account from Thomas Delaney, who spoke about his lived experience of ketamine addiction. Thomas candidly discussed his background, early life, and education, as well as the impact of drug use on his life and his journey to recovery. His talk was warmly received, and he fielded a range of questions from the audience.

The afternoon continued with Lauren Starbrook of Black Country Pathology Services discussing current findings from a toxicology perspective. Erin Wright followed with two brief presentations on emerging issues, specifically focusing on synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) and poppy straw.
Throughout the day, attendees actively engaged in discussions, culminating in a regional roundup of trends, themes, and emerging issues, which proved highly valuable for all present.
The event was hailed as a success, with gratitude extended to all guest speakers for their contributions and to attendees for dedicating time from their busy schedules to enhance their knowledge and network as part of their CPD.
